Linseed - 1sq meter
Each packet of linseed contains approx. 2,000 seeds to provide a dense crop of flax over 1 square meter.
Please note, this flax has been historically bred to produce seed so its characteristics mean that it wants to branch and go to seed early. We can discourage branching by creating a dense crop (2000 seeds per square meter), and we should expect shorter plants than fibre-bred cultivars, but we should still get a good fibre length.
Growing flax
Bed prep:
Flax can grow in almost any soil, it's not fussy!
However it cannot compete against weeds, so we recommend clearing your plot and growing a couple of false seed beds before you plant your seed. Read more about false seed beds here: https://thisnzlife.co.nz/2-organic-diy-ways-beat-weeds-spring/
Sowing:
Broadcast your seed evenly over the seedbed and lightly cover the bed with soil or gently rake the seeds in.
Growing:
Keep the soil free of weeds until your crop has grown big enough to cover the soil.
Flax takes roughly 100 days to mature,
Beware of "leasing"!
Once the flax has grown to a taller stalk, the crop can fall over in high winds and rain. To prevent this, you can install a few string lines around the crop just over halfway up the stems.
