Linseed - 1sq meter
Join us in our journey at home as we learn how to grow and process linen flax together!

Each packet of linseed contains approx. 2,000 seeds to provide a dense crop of flax over 1 square meter.

Please note, this flax has been historically bred to produce seed so its characteristics mean that it wants to branch and go to seed early. We can discourage branching by creating a dense crop (2000 seeds per square meter), and we should expect shorter plants than fibre-bred cultivars, but we should still get a good fibre length.
dried french marigolds [tagetes patula]
whole flower heads - 50g/100g

Members of the ‘Tagetes’ genus are native to Mexico and Central America, solely named ‘French’ marigolds as many of their varietals were developed in France. They have been traditionally cultivated for Day of the Dead ceremonies and are now grown extensively throughout India for use in cultural and religious ceremonies, as well as being a popular ornamental addition to gardens across the world.

Dye colours obtained – marigolds Contains flavanols and soluble carotenoids that produce beautiful vibrant yellows and oranges depending on their pre-treatment. They can modified with iron to create beautiful olive greens – this also helps improve light/washfastness. For good depth of shade, use at 50% WOF. A lesser WOF can be used to obtain paler shades. Add a small amount of soda ash to brighten shades. Can be overdyed with indigo to create a beautiful teal.

harvested BHU organics, Lincoln, Canterbury - summer 2024/25

Please note, this material comes packaged in a PLA-lined (bioplastic) kraft bag to keep its contents secure and dry whilst in transit. We recommend transferring to a paper bag or cardboard box in a dry, dark and ventilated area.

dried weld / dyer’s rocket [reseda luteola]
Weld is an ancient dye plant, it is thought to have been used since prehistoric times and was produced prolifically in Europe through to the 19th century as the most common source of yellow dye (until the importation of quercitron from the Americas). Now one of the most iconic sources of yellow dyes in the world, known for it’s excellent lightfastness.

Dye colours obtained: The plant is rich in luteolin, a flavonoid which produces a bright lightfast and UV stable yellow dye. It can be overdyed with woad (or indigo) to produce ‘Lincoln green’ (a colour often associated with Robin Hood and his band of merry men!). Combine with iron to create a wonderful chartreuse, or with iron + tannin to create a rich olive green. Samples dyed at 50% WOF.

Harvested BHU organics, Lincoln, Canterbury - Summer 2025

please note, this material comes packaged in a PLA-lined (bioplastic) kraft bag to keep its contents secure and dry whilst in transit. We recommend transferring to a paper bag or cardboard box in a dry, dark and ventilated area if not intended for immediate use.
